CAFTA
– Free Trade or Foul?
Those promoting so called “free-trade” agreements
base their support for CAFTA on the model set by the North American Free
Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This is a mistake. NAFTA resulted
in a net loss of nearly 900,000 US jobs through 2002 – and over 46,000
net jobs lost in Ohio alone. (See the study by the Economic Policy
Institute.)
NAFTA and CAFTA are managed trade agreements that protect certain
interests at the expense of others. In order to shift the trade
debate out of the “free-trader” vs. “protectionist” box, NEOCAM
has joined with hundreds of national business organizations calling for
a moratorium on further trade agreements, while a better “Smart
